Welcome to Statistics!
Discover how to make sense of data through measures of central tendency
What is Statistics?
Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data to discover patterns and make informed decisions.
In our daily lives, we encounter statistics everywhere - from weather forecasts and sports analytics to economic reports and health studies.
Understanding statistics helps us make sense of the world around us and make better decisions based on data rather than guesswork.
Interactive Example
Let's explore with real data: Test scores from a class
Data: 85, 90, 78, 92, 88, 76, 95, 89, 91, 87
Measures of Central Tendency
Mean
The average of all values in a dataset. It's calculated by adding all values and dividing by the number of values.
Median
The middle value when all data points are arranged in order. It divides the dataset into two equal halves.
Mode
The value that appears most frequently in a dataset. A dataset may have one mode, multiple modes, or no mode.
When to Use Each Measure
Each measure has its strengths and is suitable for different situations. We'll explore when to use each one throughout this module.
Real-World Example
Imagine your class took a math test. The mean score tells you the average performance, the median shows the middle score (half scored above, half below), and the mode reveals the most common score. Each measure gives you different insights!
